Digipak Sketches
These are my additional ideas for my Digipak. I like the idea of a themed photo, the photo from my Digipak will be carried forward to my Magazine advert. I'd like a clip from the music video it's self so it can be easily related, plus it would follow the colour scheme i've set for all the products. I'd also like to carry the idea of the front cover to the inside, like the Gorillaz Digipak i researched as this shows a uniform style throughout the case. The type is the one that will be used for all products the sans serif "century old Gothic" as this simple text has convention similar the products of the same genre. It also doesn't clutter the page and gives the product a clean finish.
Magazine Final Proof Explanation
The image above shows the magazine cover bleed line, this how far I could take all the text with a margin of safety, in case it came to cutting and printing, there was an error. Originally I didn't take into account this precaution, in a draft, which didn't get saved by the P.C.
The image to the right shows a continuous house style followed throughout the magazine advert, the main font used is Century Gothic which has a character spread which varies between 2000 and 100, which is allow maintained in the digipak and other related merchandise.
As an added extra, I developed my own music industry logo, this is placed on all the merchandise I produced. It have been highlighted on the magazine advert to the left.

Magazine Advert First Proof
This is my magazine advert first proof, I've tried my best to follow my set codes and convention with things like; fonts, colour schemes, images and layout with spaced typefaces. These codes and convention are followed through in all marketing products. I'm trying the follow a theme of crisp cuts and simple straight edged text maintaining a modern theme, which in my option fits the genre of the song.
I've use my research of other magazine adverts to establish a good layout, one main image, simple text and sharing of features with the digipak. Kings of Leon advert has the name of the artist at the top, this catches the targets audience attention, it also stages the information down; album name, additional information and release date I also included these features. All the magazine adverts I researched include the album image as the main picture, this allows the audience to relate the two products this makes it easier to find and buy the C.D. Each advert also include a web address at the very bottom for the audience to gain more information.

Target Audience
Target individual -Profile
This is James west, aged 19, as you can tell he's a skate boarder, but that just one of the many things about James. James love his music, he's not picky however his favorites tend to be dubstep/electro, folk and pop, he downloads all his music, but the artists he loves, he's got the album. Socializing? not a issue, James is always looking for a good time to enjoy his life, he may not have 1000's of friends, but he has got a few really close friends he always skates and hangs around with. James isn't fussed at all about what he dresses like, he just wears what he wants and what's comfortable, plus he doesn't like spending a bomb, he mainly shops on eBay, Primark or H&M. James has a part time job, and tries to save his money, but it always goes in the first week. James loves relaxing and the summer, both of these together is his dream, exams aren't his forte. He's a funny guy and loves artistic work, living near the city gives him the most inspiration.

Florence and the machines - Magazine advert
Like the other examples this advert follows the generic codes and conventions of having the album artwork as it's main image. Having the contrast of whites and black helps the text stand out, this is important to display release dates, well known songs and album name. Having the album name helps fans search for it on the internet and on-line An extra feature on the this advert is it tells people the variety way the Music comes in.

The Killers - Magazine advert
Once again the advert uses the image from the new album, this shows a link between the two, helping audience recognition. This image is more basic than the one on the kings of Leon album. The advert, again, clearly displays the title of the album and the name of the band which
clearly stands out due to the bold font used which does follow the both products house style. Advertising the most famous/well know song will generate interest and increase sales.
Kings of Leon - Magazine advert
This advert follows the same layout, colour scheme, photography as the CD cover. This will allow customers to easily identify the CD on the shop's shelves. These code and convention help kings of leon appeal to their target audience and fan base. Having information like the most well know singles, the album name the artist name in bold capitals, strong contrasting colours between the background and text helps it stand out to potential listeners. The release
data of the album is also shown and again the use of a large font makes this
stand out to the audience. This also allows the advert to be easily visible
from a distance.

This is a music video by Paolo Nutini, I love this video for it's humour. The video is indie like the genre of music Paolo sings.
This is a video from "Ok Go" who are renowned for there unique and buzzard music videos. Their videos are very technical and always leaves the audience in awe every time they watch them.
Once again, another music video by "Ok go", this so different from any other video, the forward planning and attention to detail all help produce a music video you can't not watch!

Magazine sketches
These are my simple sketches for my music advert, I wanted it to simple font maybe san serif and not too be cluttered with text. So you get an idea of a main picture, this follows the convention from other magazine advert of the same genre like the 'kings of Leon' and the killers. However I think it looks better with the text centered as this would conform with the other adverts, it also make the text stand out, catch readers attention.
Test Footage-Time Lapse
This test footage was captured on the 3rd October by me. I woke up at 5:30am in order to capture the sun rising and the horizon slowly lighting up. The total time of both clips is 2 hours, however I edited it down on Premiere Pro condensing the clip into a time lapse of just 30 seconds. I created the time lapse effect by using the rate stretch tool, and dragging the clip inwards to the time I wanted.

The codes and convention carried throughout this digipak are typical to Calvin Harris music and the genre of music. There strong type, sans serif, block capitals and the colour is a strong contrast to the background image. The back ground image is featured in well known music video and includes the main singer/character of most of the videos, having him there adds to audience relationship and recognition. Similar colour scheme is used throughout most of his albums, the urban greys with a sunny tint this is typical to his genre electro-dance. Repetition to the back of the album, linking the two together shows a theme to the album, it also enforces the song in which it's taken from, promoting it. The simple design of the this Digipak is similar to others of the same genre.

Rudimental's Digipak
These are a variety of rudimental's albums, with the bottom one being the main newest album.
One thing I noticed from the first 4 pictures they all contain a clip or image from the main music video in that album. The layout has the artist/bands name in big serif font at the top of the cover, each have an contrast to it's background. This makes the name stand out to customers and the targeted audience. Then underneath the name, in a directly opposite colour the album name, in a thin san serif, in particular on 'Free's album cover there's large kerning in-between characters, this give the text present, spreads information across the cover.
The colour theme of the covers ties in with the main video, however if we look at their new album 'home' the sun setting behind a graffiti wall, this emphasises an urban feel with adventure (setting sun) this links well into the genre of their music (electronic music).
On the back cover there is a close up of a rusty plaque this adds to the urban feel. The type for the track list is a big block San serif font, this stands out well and allows the audience find songs they like. Next to the track list, in a smaller thinner version of the track font, is supporting acts names these are small not to distract attention form the tracks. All of these album have a themed photo as the cover and a main image, with an image that's iconic to the artist, it acts as a sign that the audience can recognise.
Gorillaz Digipak
This digipak has 5 panels and is double sided, containing graphic illustrations. Each of the 4 panels fold out from the centre panel which holds the CD. The way the digipak works is very unquie and doesn't comply to common Digipaks. The faces on each panel is doubled on each side with a different expression, this relates to their music being multi genred (which is polysemic and postmodern!). I'm guessing that the album cover, is likely to be on the opposite side of the
square holding the disk. I say this, because it is the only flap that would be
left over, provided that all of the character flaps are double sided.
The Gorillaz
aren’t known for following stereotypical convention, this is evident by the way
each character hides their faces behind cartoon representation of themselves, rather
than letting everyone become aware of who they all really are. The white background helps the graphic stand out.

Newton Faulkner DigiPak
There are many codes and convention of Newton Faulkner's digipak "write it on your skin". The first code that really sticks out is the typography used is maintained throughout the whole casing; with the lyrics, title and tracks included. The aim of this style of text matches the genre of acoustic music. Using a odd mash up of letters and type shows him as an indie artist. This hand written effect font, shows effort was put into the production of the digipak. However it could be intended to have a relaxed look.
The styles of the digipak with soft warm lighting and framing to make it off centre and have a scrapbook look, gives the effect of it being timeless, linking in with sitting around a camp fire with a guitar. This informal looks links with the stereotype with his indie folk kind of music. However the sense of quality is still there, with the imagery being very crisp and having a warm filter, this also is a quick identifier of genre. The colour scheme used fits around newton, making it look as though he belongs there, it installs confidants into the customers that he's a professional and his music is of good quality.
The back cover does not have any image of Newton
Faulkner the entire picture is a close up of his ginger dread locks which have
become a kind of symbol for him because there are not many people with ginger
dread locks let alone singer song writers. Once again the framing of the
photograph is much like that of a scrap book as on the front cover, this sets a
good image and style that is used throughout the album so that not only does
Newton Faulkner have a defined image but so does the album its self. these base are ones I wish to include into my digipak.

This is a music video by The Script called "The Hall of Fame". The accompanying music video sees the stars performing the track in a deserted warehouse, while other scenes feature an aspiring boxer and deaf ballet dancer in training.
The video starts of with no music and ambient sound, like the other music videos I've chosen, this focus the audience to the storyline. The music starts as the Irish mothers voice fades and echoes, this give the effect of a dream or something in the past. The echo and fade of music adds emotions to the video as it starts to follow their "lives" to success.
The camera angles are handheld at the beginning of the video, this adds realism, drama and truth to the video. However when the actors are succeeding the camera angles are low, to give the dominates and still master shots, this gives the shot for professionally. There are lots of pace cuts with the music to add triumph as the actors progress in dance and boxing.
The video follows a two story's this engages the audience more as they want to follow the music and story.
Sunday, 16 June 2013
This is a music video called "A Team" by Ed Sheeran. The video is about a homeless women who has to become a prostitute to feed her drug addiction. This is another video that has a story to go with it. The video looks like it is shot with a high quality handheld video camera, and uses London as its setting, this helps a sense of realism in the clip as hand held shot makes the audience feel like they're involved in the video. The camera shots usually consist of long shots and close ups, making the audience focus on the subject actor. The video is also filmed completely in black and white, which backs the idea the singer is trying to portray (getting the audience to see the problem clearly).
This is a music video for the song "Waiting all Night" by Rudimental. The video consist of alot of hand held shots, this enforces realism in the video, which follows the inspirational true life-story of San Francisco born BMX champion and actor - Kurt Yaeger, who became an amputee after an accident in 2006. All the characters in the clip are pro bmx'ers and the real friends of Kurt.
At the beginning of the video pase editing has been used, to build suspense and confused to relate to the city. In this part of the clip, the use of ambient sound emphasises confusion, when Kurt gets hit by the van ambient sound instantly engages the audience to the nature of the video. The fade out to black, then the instant cut of video and music to Kurt in hospital and his friends around him shows a change from the confusion of the city and slows the video down and adds emotion.
The natural real life acting goes well with the music which give a feel of sadness, pase and triumph. Other things like lighting aren't taken massively into effect as this would introduce a artificial feeling to the clip. This feel of real life is something I like in video, having a back story makes the audience instantly more interested, making the music video more of a short film.
